I consider my back yard a really big part of my life. It is an essential part of my family and the way we live. It represents who we are in a number of different ways. Not only does it represent the children’s interests and hobbies that change with their growth but also a place where I know my things such as my boat and tools will be secure and looked after.

The family is able to grow together in a backyard environment because it has the ability take part in projects like growing a veggie garden, nurturing an orchid or building a chook pen. It’s these sorts of activities that bring a family closer together and develop a family bond.

My backyard, apart from the all the activities that each member of the family is involved in, provides an environment away from things like work or cricket or school. This gives us a private environment where we can just be ourselves. All worries seem to fade away with having our own patch of turf where the love and security of the family and its interests can evolve. It’s a safe and changing environment that is full of family interests and hobbies, and also a place where you can express yourself and get connected with your family.

Growing up in Darwin, I spent all my time outdoors. Now whenever I get a few days off, I go back and head out bush with my brother. We go out for days on end and I just love it. I take my kids and I love seeing the enjoyment in their eyes – feeling so free.

Living in Adelaide – my backyard is my haven. It’s where I can relax, tune off and makes me feel like I’m back at home. My backyard is about my family. It’s about playing in the pool, sharing time with the kids, and BBQ’s with friends. It keeps me alive.

I live in Sydney and by the water so I love being outdoors with my family. My backyard means quality time with my family in the sunshine and enjoying a BBQ or some backyard footy.

When I’m in my backyard I know it's truly holiday time. It’s the only place where I am fully relaxed because I know all my work commitments have finished and I can just enjoy!

Throughout all my life - as a young boy growing up in Adelaide, and now as a man living in Perth - my backyard has always been all about enjoying quintessential Australian things - the outdoors, sport and laughter/good times around the BBQ with my family and friends.

It's my own natural sanctuary and somewhere you can completely relax and forget about the outside world.
